  • GUN SENSE MATTERS

Gun violence is a pervasive issue affecting communities across Texas and the nation, including District 126. The alarming rise in crime, school shootings, suicides, and accidental discharges underscores the urgent need for common-sense gun safety measures. Our district, like many others, has seen the tragic consequences of gun violence, affecting families, schools, and neighborhoods. The impact of these events extends beyond the immediate victims, leaving lasting trauma and fear in our community. As a proud Texan, I understand that we love our weapons, and I fully respect the right to bear arms as protected by the Second Amendment. My stance is not about taking away anyone’s rights but ensuring that gun sense is practiced by all. It’s about protecting our families, reducing gun violence, and preventing unnecessary tragedies. By promoting responsible gun ownership, safety education, and common-sense measures, we can work towards a future where everyone is kept safe and perhaps see a decrease in gun violence, suicides, and accidental shootings.

Challenges Faced by District 126 Regarding Gun Safety and Violence Prevention:Rising Crime and Gun Violence: District 126 has seen an increase in gun-related crimes, including homicides, robberies, and assaults, posing significant safety concerns for residents and law enforcement.

School Shootings and Youth Violence: Schools nationwide, including those in Texas, have been targets of gun violence, highlighting the urgent need for measures to protect students, educators, and school staff.

Suicide and Mental Health: Firearm access significantly increases the risk of suicide, particularly among youth and those struggling with mental health issues. More needs to be done to address the link between gun access and suicide prevention.

Inadequate Gun Safety Education: Many gun owners lack access to proper training and safety education, increasing the risk of accidental discharges and misuse, especially in homes with children.

Proposed Actions to Address Gun Safety and Violence Prevention in District 126:

  1. Implement Comprehensive Background Checks and Safe Storage Initiatives Action: Advocate for expanded background checks on all gun sales, including private and online transactions, to prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands. Promote safe storage laws requiring gun owners to secure firearms safely, particularly in homes with children. Measurement: Success will be measured by the number of new safety measures enacted, reductions in gun-related incidents, and increased compliance with safe storage practices, aiming for a 25% reduction in accidental discharges and stolen firearms within two years.
  2. Support Gun Safety Education and Responsible Ownership Programs Action: Partner with local law enforcement, gun clubs, and community organizations to provide free or low-cost gun safety courses that cover proper handling, safe storage, and responsible ownership. Offer these programs in multiple languages to ensure accessibility for all residents. Measurement: Track participation rates in safety courses and measure changes in community knowledge and behavior related to gun safety, with a goal of training 500 residents annually.
  3. Advocate for Red Flag Laws to Prevent Gun Violence Action: Support the implementation of red flag laws that allow temporary removal of firearms from individuals deemed a risk to themselves or others by a court. These laws are critical for preventing suicides, domestic violence, and potential mass shootings. Measurement: Measure success by the number of interventions under red flag laws and their impact on reducing gun-related suicides and domestic violence incidents, aiming for a 30% decrease in firearm-related deaths.
  4. Increase Mental Health Resources and Crisis Intervention Services Action: Expand access to mental health services, including crisis intervention and counseling, particularly for youth and veterans. Partner with schools, community centers, and healthcare providers to offer support for those at risk of self-harm or violence. Measurement: Track the availability and usage of mental health services, aiming to increase access by 40% within the first two years and reduce suicide rates in the district.
  5. Promote Community Gun Buyback Programs Action: Organize gun buyback events in collaboration with local law enforcement to safely remove unwanted firearms from homes, reducing the risk of accidents, theft, and misuse. Measurement: Success will be measured by the number of firearms collected and the reduction in gun-related incidents in participating communities, with a goal of collecting at least 300 firearms annually.

Measuring Outcomes of These Actions in District 126:

  1. Crime and Incident Reporting Data: Regularly analyze data on gun-related crimes, accidents, and suicides to evaluate the effectiveness of safety measures, education programs, and red flag interventions.
  2. Community Feedback and Safety Surveys: Conduct surveys to assess residents’ perceptions of safety, their awareness of gun safety practices, and the impact of community programs on reducing gun violence.
  3. Mental Health and Crisis Service Utilization: Monitor the number of individuals accessing mental health and crisis intervention services, focusing on trends in firearm-related suicides and violence prevention outcomes.

Addressing Gun Safety and Violence Prevention at the State Level:

  1. Advocate for Statewide Comprehensive Background Checks and Safe Storage Laws: Work towards enacting legislation that requires background checks for all gun sales and implements safe storage laws to prevent unauthorized access to firearms, especially by children and those at risk.
  2. Support the Passage of Red Flag Laws in Texas: Champion the introduction and passage of red flag laws that provide a legal mechanism to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who pose a risk to themselves or others, aiming to prevent potential tragedies.
  3. Promote State-Funded Gun Safety Education and Training Programs: Advocate for state funding to support gun safety education initiatives, making training accessible to all residents and promoting responsible gun ownership across Texas.
  4. Increase State Funding for Mental Health and Crisis Intervention Services: Push for expanded funding for mental health resources, including support for crisis hotlines, counseling, and intervention services targeted at preventing gun-related suicides and violence.
  5. Support the Expansion of Gun Buyback Programs Statewide: Encourage state support for gun buyback programs as a proactive measure to reduce the number of firearms in circulation, particularly those that are unwanted or pose a safety risk.

Current State-Level Initiatives and Bills Supporting Gun Safety:

Proposed Background Check Expansion Bills: Efforts are underway to expand background check requirements in Texas to include private sales, closing loopholes that currently allow firearms to be purchased without a check.

Red Flag Law Proposals: There have been multiple proposals in recent legislative sessions to introduce red flag laws in Texas, with growing bipartisan support for measures that protect public safety while respecting individual rights.

Safe Storage Awareness Campaigns: State agencies have begun promoting safe storage practices through public awareness campaigns, highlighting the importance of securing firearms to prevent accidents and unauthorized access.

Through these actions and ongoing advocacy, I am committed to addressing gun safety and violence prevention in District 126. By implementing common-sense measures and prioritizing community safety, we can work towards a future where our homes, schools, and public spaces are safer for everyone.
